ONE of the fatalities of the recent coordinated 3-city bombing was an applicant for a job abroad. The immediate members
of his family were one in saying that the victim was their only hope in cutting off the chains that bound them to a life-long
poverty.
The horrible incident caused by the terrorists only emphasizes the fact that most of the violence
they sow victimizes the wrong people and thus addresses the wrong problem. If they can come back to the scenes of their crimes,
they will see that these places are always littered by the blood and other valualbes of the poor who, like them, are being
victimized by the rich, the powerful and the politicians. But unlike these criminals, the poor struggle peacefully so that
their loved ones may survive and even enjoy a better life.
Just look at the places where these terroriss placed their bombs. These bombs were placed
in busses, bus terminals and other areas where marginalized people congregate or use. These places only show the terrorists
that they are the most ineffective, inefficient and most stupid aside from being cowardly warriors in the world.
Why? Because after a week of hugging the news and hieghtened security alerts, life for the rich
and the powerful goes back to normal while on the other hand, the lives of the poor victims will be far from normal specially
those whose day-to-day survival as well as future depend on the income generation of those who died or were maimed.
Some children will stop going to school. Some families will be broken and their children distributed
to different relatives. Some will have their source of electricity and water cut off while others will be evicted from the
house they rent. What other miseries will visit them now? Will they join the fast growing population of street occupants?
Will mothers be deranged and walk on the streets as "taong-grasa"? What have more these terrorists done to destroy their lives
aside from violence?
Meanwhile, the people who mattered-the rich, the powerful and the politicians, will have gone
back to their life of luxury. The little inconveniences like moving cash out of the country, planning transferring their children
to safer schools abroad and looking for investments overseas will just be delegated to hired helps like accountants, lawyers
and investment companies. Yet their exploitative ways will go on maintained and unchanged.
So the cause of the terrorists will not have moved forward but instead stalled because in lieu
of the sympathy and recognition, these terrorists have only reaped hatred and misunderstanding of their cause. Nobody really
gained.
So it is time for these terrorists to takee stock of their methods and their future if they want
their cause to advance. There must be a better way. A better way for the poor to suffer less and for the rich, the powerful
and the politicians to take notice. The most respected Indian, Gandhi and American King, proved to the world that non-violence
can make immense changes in government and in politics. The Phjilippines showed the world that a country can cause a dictator
to flee without shedding blood. Germany folowed the Philippine example by bringing down the walls that for decades halved
their country into two governments and ideologies.
The poor can and must change this bloody and violent practice against them. We pray that a non-violent
way of protest can change the worlsd. Let us seek this new way and make the loss of lives and limbs of the innocent more meaningful.
